A really fun, light read. The book provides some interesting origins and meanings of loads of expressions, some of these are shockingly recent and others are truely medevial. I would recommend this to someone who just wants a giggle and a pretence at learning new stuff.
Here is one of the common expressions that made me laugh “Too many cooks spoil the broth” Groucho Marx changed it to “I’m going to stop asking my cooks to prepare broth for me. Over the years, I’ve found that too many broths spoil the cook.”
Here was a suprise fact (to me at least), the star spangled banner was adopted as the official anthem of the United States in 1931. I had always assumed it was over 100 years older than that.
